Rules and Application Form
Composers are invited to apply for a place in the 3rd European Composers
Competition, to be held in Belfast, Northern Ireland, in 2006 as part
of the 28th European Brass Band Championships.
The Final of the Competition will take place on the 27th April 2006.
The competition will consist of two preliminary rounds and a final. The
final will take place in Belfast's magnificent Waterfront Hall, where
the new compositions will be performed by leading bands of Northern Ireland.
There will be prizes of EUR 1'500, 1'000, 500 and 500, as well as special
awards for the finalists. All competitors who reach the final will receive
a diploma.
Applicants must have been born on or after January 1st, 1971. For an

3rd European Composers Competition
Composers who are native Europeans or resident in Europe are invited to
compete in the 3rd European Composers Competition (ECC). The European
Brass Band Association (EBBA) organizes this competition of which the
finals will be held on the 27th April 2006 in Belfast the 3rd European
Composers Competition.
Organisation
The EBBA will be responsible for the planning and running of the competition
and will set up the Juries. The Juries will be consisting of musicians
and composers of prominent standing and will judge under the set rules
of the competition. The event will be organized together with the organizers
of the 28th European Brass Band Championships 2006 in Belfast, Northern
Ireland.
Conditions of the competition
1. The 3rd European Composers Competition 2006 in Belfast is open to all
composers born on or after January 1st, 1971 and who are native Europeans
or resident in Europe.
2. The enclosed entry form should be sent by January 31st 2006 (date of
postmark) to:

3. By submitting the entry form completed by typewriter or block letters
the candidate accepts the conditions of the competition. Two recent portrait-photos
and a short curriculum vitae should be enclosed.
4. For the registration all applicants are required to pay an entry fee
of EUR 150.-- free of all bank charges for EBBA by direct credit to the
EBBA, IBAN BE 97 2850 5087 8549 (SWIFT/BIC: GEBABEBB) with the Fortis
Bank, Bruggestraat 19, B-8770 Ingelmunster, Belgium, quoting “ECC
Belfast 2006”, at the latest by 28th February 2006 (payments by
cheques are not accepted). The name of the applicant must be given in
full even if he/she does not pay the registration fee in person.
5. The duration of the composition should be maximum 7-8 minutes and
the grade of difficulty for Brass Band in the 3rd or 4th section. A code-word
chosen by the composer must be written on the score. Entries must be accompanied
by 3 full scores (A4 format) with the band parts in a sealed envelope
bearing the same code-word and containing the completed application form
and the documents mentioned above. Neither the entries nor the sealed
envelope should make reference to the composer. All materials must be
submitted not later than 31st January 2006 by registered mail to the above
mentioned EBBA address.
6. Travelling, board and lodging expenses for competitors who want to
be present at the Final of the Composers Competition are the responsibility
of the competitors themselves.
7. The finalists should be prepared to be present at the Concert of the
Final of the European Composers Competition 2006 in Belfast, Thursday,
27th April 2006.
8. The EBBA is authorized to record acoustically and visually all concerts
or events within the period of the competition and to use these recordings
to publicize the competition. The EBBA particularly reserves the right
to authorize Radio and TV stations to broadcast, record and transmit all
events of the competition and to permit the production and sale of CD's,
DVD’s and other sound carriers from performances of the competition.
No claims for reimbursement for the candidates will be considered. In
submitting his/her application, the candidate is deemed to have agreed
to this.
Sequence of the events
9. The competition consists of Round 1 and 2 and the final. The standard
of the quality of the composition, and the instrumentation technique will
be taken in to consideration by the jury for choosing the participants
for round 2 and the final. A maximum of 3-6 candidates will be chosen
by the jury for the final. The band playing in the Final and the audience
in the hall have a voice in the jury team but no vote. After the final
the leader of the bands and the audience can give their opinion in writing
to the chairman of the jury.
In the Final of the European Composers Competition the compositions of
the finalists will be played by a top Brass Band and an international
jury will decide the results of the final.
10. The draw for the order of the competitors in the final will be taken
in their presence.
Jury
11. The adjudication will be done by a jury consisting of distinguished
composers, musicians and pedagogues from Europe. The names of the members
in the jury for the final will be announced prior to the commencement
of the final of competition.
12. The Jury will make its decisions according to the regulations. No
appeal will considered against the decision of the jury.
Prizes
13. The following prizes can be awarded:

Audience prize 500 EUR
The prize winner must receive their prizes in person. These will be presented
at the conclusion of the Final.
14. The winner of the 3rd European Composers Competition is given the
title
“Winner of the European Composers Competition 2006”
15. The second and third prize winners are entitled to call themselves
“Prize winner of the European Composers Competition 2006”
16. Promotion awards and special prizes can be given to the participants
of the final.
17. Prize winners and participants of the final rounds receive certificates.
18. The EBBA will try to arrange that the prize winners will have the
chance to get an order to compose a test piece in one of the member countries
of EBBA.
