EBBA and the Swiss Brass Band Association as the host of the EBBC 2011 in Montreux (Switzerland) have announce the names of the two composers who have been commissioned to write the test pieces for the EBBC 2011. The test piece for the Championship section will be written by already well known young Swiss composer Oliver Waespi and the one for the B-section will be written by Stephan Hodel.
Oliver Waespi, born in 1971 in Zurich, comleted his studies in composition at the Musikhochschule Zurich with Gerald Bennett and Andreas Nick and spent an additional post graduate study at the Royal Academy of Music in London. He has followed Master classes and private studies with Simon Bainbridge, Peter Maxwell Davies, Brian Elias, Klaus Huber, Alfred Reed, Sylvia Caduff and Michael Rose on Vanderbuilt University/USA. Many of his works have been awarded. He received the International George Enescu Composition Prize for Symphonic Music in 2003 and was awarded a fellowship in London sponsored by the Landis and Gyr Cultural Foundation in Zug in 2005. Stephan Hodel, a Swiss-born composer/arranger is a graduate of the Royal Colledge of Music where he completed his post graduate studies with distinction in composition with Joseph Horovitz and composition for screen with Howard Davidson. In 2006 he was awarded the "Cobett and Hurlstone Prize" at the RCM. He also studied jazz composition and arranging at Berklee College of Music in Boston and holds degrees in conduction and music education from Musikhochschule Luzern.
