Objects and activities

One of the objects of the Association shall be to further and promote the intrinsic, aesthetic and social values of brass bands in Europe. Each year EBBA will plan, organise and supervise the EBBC together with any appropriate events for example conferences, forums, meetings, workshops and masterclasses for European brass bands, musicians, conductors, jury and panel members, and composers. Further EBBA will make efforts to establish contacts with music education institutions to promote better recognition of the brass band within the context of music studies. About activities and business of the European Brass Band Association (EBBA) during the year 2008, given at the General Meeting of the EBBA on 3 May 2009 in Oostende, Belgium.

__________________________________________________________

Introduction

This is the first year of the Annual Report in a new cycle, following the calendar year instead of previous years from GM to GM. This gives a connection between the financial reports, accounts and the annual report. Due to this, there are this first year some overlaps between the previous annual report and the 2008-report.

EBBA duties

The European Brass Band Association was founded in 1995 in Luxembourg. he objects of the Associations are:
to further and promote the intrinsic, aesthetic and social values of brass bands in Europe without frontiers, confines or discrimination of any kind whether such be of a national, cultural, racial, religious or political nature; to promote high-level musical interpretation and performance and to extend the choice and quality of stock pieces for brass bands; to create awareness of the brass band as a multi-cultural means of expression in geographical areas which have little or no knowledge of this style of music and to attract increasingly wide audiences.

The European Brass Band Association is bringing the European Brass Band movement closer together. The different National Associations, musicians, teachers and conductors are exchanging their knowledge and their ideas. Besides the contesting there is a friendly atmosphere and a lot of networking between the musicians and conductors all over Europe.

Since 1998 the EBBA have also organised side events alongside the European Brass Band Championship:
European Soloists Competition
European Composers Competition
European Conductors Competition

Many winners of these competitions have been helped in their subsequent careers and are now well known conductors, musicians or composers.

EBBC Stavanger 2008

In 1978 the 1st European Brass Band Championship was held in the Royal Albert Hall, London. EBBC has now been held for the fourth time in Norway and for the first time in Stavanger. Each National Association and member of the European Brass Band Association nominates its National Champion Band to participate in the European Brass Band Championship.

An international audience, in sold out halls, enjoyed the very high standard of performances at the 31st EBBC in Stavanger with 15 bands from 13 different countries: Austria, Belgium, Denmark, England, Germany, Italy, Northern Ireland, Netherlands, Norway, Switzerland, Scotland, Sweden and Wales. We congratulate the European Brass Band Champion 2008: Cory Band, Wales.

The EBBA is working to encourage more countries to create brass band movements. Since 1994 when the B-section was first implemented, the brass band movements in France and Austria have been growing, and now also Germany have a national championships and more countries are developing. It was a disappointment when in 2008 again we only had three countries for the B-section. Therefore the hosting country was invited to nominate an extra B-section band.

We congratulate the European Brass Band winner of the B-section: Brass Band "Frener-Reifer" Pfeffersberg, Italy. 25 entrants sent in their applications for the 4th European Conductors Competition, of which 17 were invited to Stavanger. We had the highest level ever in this competition. We congratulate the finalists and the winner of the competition: Mathias Wehr, Germany.

Soon after EBBA's EBBC in Stavanger/Norway the EBBA Executive Committee made an analysis and a feedback of the event and its organisation. Because the EBBC is in a different country every year, it is not easy to maintain the high standard and the quality of organisation. It is therefore good for the event if in some years we can benefit from the experience of organisations that have hosted the EBBC in previous years.

The Norwegian Band Federation (NMF) worked hard to present the EBBC 2008 in the City of Stavanger. EBBA and the EBBC organisation enjoyed phenomenal support of the City of Stavanger, Stavanger 2008 European Capital of Culture and the Rogaland County Council, which we greatly acknowledge. The event manager Kulturoperatørene with Øyvind Storheim, on a contract with NMF, and a large volunteer staff worked very efficiently to organise the EBBC 2008 and we thank them for their cooperation and friendly assistance.

The European Youth Brass Band was together for the whole European week 2008 under the excellent leadership of Reid Gilje from Norway. The band and audience enjoyed several concerts during the week. It is fascinating how the level of the youth band develops from year to year. This is an important platform for young players all over Europe to network, develop their skills, play at a high level with other young people and boost their interest in brass band.

Sponsors and partners
The main sponsor is Besson (contract 2008-2010).

The principal partner is World of Brass (contract 2008-2010) with the recording and filming rights.

We are very thankful to Besson and World of Brass for their constructive and enthusiastic involvement and commitment to EBBA/EBBC.

Music publisher De Haske last year signed a contract for 2008-2010.

Today EBBA has the following sponsor team: World of Brass (principal partner) - Besson (main sponsor) and Doyen Recordings, Miraphone, Premier Percussion, British Bandsman, De Haske Publications and The Music Company as sponsors. The agreement with WMC Kerkrade ended in 2008. Tor Design (England) supplied European Youth Brass Band with new banners. We thank them for their important support.

Many thanks also go to the EBBA member countries that sponsored the side event competition in 2008:

British Federation of Brass Band

Dutch Christian Music Federation

Flemish Brass Band Federation

Norwegian Band Federation

Scottish Brass Band Association

Swiss Brass Band Association

Already in 2003 a special EBBA EU committee was formed to bring forward an application for EU funding of EBBA, EBBC, side events, EYBB and new projects. The committee presented an application to the EU-program for Educations, Audiovisual & Culture Executive Agency of Europe. The application called "Wind of Change" was under the EU's program for support to cultural actions 2007-2013. EBBA also presented an application to EU in their program for support for cultural bodies. Unfortunately the application was rejected by EU. It reached in total 20.3 points of the maximum 30.0 points. The limit for acceptance was 22.5 points (April 2009).

EBBA will after some disappointing results from the applications evaluate future possibilities for EU support. As a European democratic organisation and network we have 13 member countries with their national contests qualifying for the annual European Brass Band Championships, plus the B-section for countries with a developing brass band movement, triennial contest for European conductors/soloists/composers and the European Youth Brass Band, EBBA should clearly deserve some EU funding in the future.

www.ebba.eu.comEBBA have on our web site information about the EBBC and side events, rules and addresses. And links to the websites of our co-sponsor's, to the band press and national band associations. Thanks to Peter Fraser as EBBA's webmaster. EC decided that the web site shall undergo a new design and contain more information and be released before the 2009-event.

EBBC 2009-2010-2011-2012
Preparations were by the end of the year well advanced in the hosting organisations for EBBC 2009 in Oostende, Belgium and EBBC 2010 in Linz, Austria. EC visited Oostende in September 2008 to meet the organisers. Also the President and the General Secretary have made a separate visit to Oostende.

At the GM in 2008 Montreux, Switzerland, was elected as the organiser of EBBC in 2011.

Many cities and organisations in Europe are anxious to win the election and to get this most prestigious band event to their country. Several have shown interest for the future EBBC.

EBBA has during the year explored different alternatives for the EBBC 2012, also with a possible World Brass Band Championships. By the end of the year no conclusion has been reached.

Thanks

EBBA EC would like to thank all the delegates of the different member countries for their support, confidence and work together with EBBA, to guide and develop the European Brass Band movement into new directions.

EBBA president Ulf Rosenberg thanks his colleagues in the Executive Committee and the Music Commission for all their hard work. Stavanger in April 2009
